Summary/Abstract: The author presents a documentary referring to the status of the Romanians living in the South-Eastern European area, in an attempt to point out the ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious aspects shaping a distinctive identity of the respective Romanian communities. She presents therefore the de jure and de facto status of the Macedonian Romanians in Albania, Macedonia and Greece, as well as that of the Romanian communities in Bulgaria, Serbia-Montenegro, Hungary and Ukraine, from elements regarding their representative organizations, education, divine service or the media in their mother tongue, down to their representation in the public administration of their citizenship/residential State. The observance of the international standards in the field and the creation of a bilateral framework favourable to the promotion of the rights of the Romanian nationals in the above-mentioned area, on a reciprocity basis, are essential objectives of foreign policy which still call for additional efforts.
