Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the understanding and frequency of the independent use of the words assigned to Kanak Sprak among German language learners in Germany, and to analyze the collected data according to the language level, age, gender and length of stay in Germany. A survey was conducted to examine the independent use and understanding of the aforementioned words. The participants who took part in the survey are both men and women between the ages of 16 and 47, originating from different countries. have different German language levels and attend German courses in Munich. Data from a total of 35 surveyed participants were analyzed to determine whether the elements of Kanak Sprak were independently understood and used in everyday communication. The results show that the male test subjects understand more terms, but the female test subjects use them more often on their own. Furthermore, a difference in language use and active use of Kanak Sprak, with regard to the language level, can be seen. Most of the words are understood and used by German language learners at the language level of B2. In relation to the length of stay in Germany on the understanding of the terms from Kanak Sprak, an increase can be deduced, as was to be expected, while no increasing tendency was shown in active use with longer length of stay. The data analysis also shows that the Kanak Sprak is not only reserved for young people. Although older learners understand more Kanak Sprak terms, these are ultimately most actively used in communication by young people.
