Summary/Abstract: Post-Byzantine art has long been criticized for its Western stylistic influences, which have been uncritically posited as derivative reformulations of Italian paintings, drawings, and engravings in the space of an Orthodox icon. In this article, a revision of this approach to Post-Byzantine art is offered that re-centers the debate around the discourse on imitability and emphasizes the role of artistic influence as a phenomenon of the complex cross-cultural transmissions of the early modern Mediterranean world.
