Summary/Abstract: This text constitutes a reflection upon an experience that took place in a class where the fifth year translation students had to translate, from French into Arabic, La Charte montréalaise des droits et responsabilités published by the Montreal City Hall. The problem encountered was less of a linguistic nature than a conceptual discrepancy between the referential value of three key concepts in the source text and the target text. The importance of this experience lies in the intercultural exchange that took place between the Canadian text and the Arabic text and consequently between the Canadian public and the Arabic public.
