State, State-Building and Security in the Western Balkans

Summary/Abstract: The state-building processes of the weak states in the region are closely related to the European integration process of the region. Although there are ongoing efforts in all these countries to reform institutional capacity of the state in accordance to European standards, it can be concluded that these reforms are, at best, only mildly effective. That is why, the paper argues that real success of the state building efforts in the region depends on the embracement of these efforts by the people.
