Summary/Abstract: On May 22, 1987, the last pulse of life faded from a man named Petru Bota, known to all in his village as "Bade Petru," or "Uncle Peter. " He was 93 years old, and he was lucid until the moment of his departing. Petru Bota was not the sort of fellow to be widely known beyond the borders of the Transylvanian village in which he spent most of his life. He was born and died a small farmer, his holdings at their maximum amounting to no more than six hectares, in soils of middling quality.
