Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at presenting the historical development of the Old Bulgarian etymological vowel а, я (the umlaut of the vowel а, я) in the phonetic systems of the dialects spoken in the southern part of the я-isoglottic zone: Razlog Region; Sandanski Region, Petrich Region, Gotse Delchev Region, Drama Region, Serres Region and Thessaloniki Region. The study proves the existence of an archaic umlaut of the vowel а (я) in the Razlog and Thessaloniki dialects.
