Summary/Abstract: Hungary's economy was devastated as a result of the war. According to Berend and Ranki, about 24 percent of the country's industrial capacity was destroyed and 74 percent of the buildings in the capital city suffered damage. The transportation system was paralyzed and, since military activity made normal agricultural activity impossible in 1944 and early 1945, over half of Hungary's livestock died.
