Ecuador’s foreign trade in edible fruit in 2008-2018

Summary/Abstract: The issue of foreign trade in Polish economic literature is relatively common. However, there are no publications on a given topic regarding Ecuador, for which foreign trade in agri-food products such as edible fruit is of fundamental economic importance. An important and necessary element of the study of foreign trade in Ecuador's edible fruit is the analysis of the assortment and geographical structure. Also the assessment of its development on the basis of the intra-industry trade model. The purpose of the article is to show changes in foreign trade in Ecuador's edible fruit based on the analysis of trade results in 2008-2018. Tools in the form of the International Classification of Goods – SITC, Grubel-Lloyd index, indicators of the dynamics of phenomena and percentage were used. The study showed that in the period under review, fruit and nuts, fresh and dried (excluding nut oils) recorded an increase in the share in the vegetables and fruits subsection by 4,58 p.p. (export) and 12,71 p.p. (import). On the other hand, the export of the main commercial product - fresh and dried bananas has become more dynamic, generating an increase in trade flows of 96,22%. The analysis of the intensity of intra-industry trade showed that in the analyzed period it was not the main form of Ecuadorian foreign trade in edible fruit and the total agri-food sector. This is evidenced by the calculated low level of the Grubel-Lloyd index and its declining tendency. In the years 2008-2018 the index decreased at the level of: 2.11 p.p. (edible fruit) and 20.60 p.p. (total agrifood sector).
