Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to show the role and place of colloquial language in contemporary Russian, to demonstrate the influence of the Internet on this particular language system, as well as to present the necessity of acquiring a colloquial lexicon by students, which seems to be an indispensable factor in taking an active part in real communication in Russian (including using Internet-based resources). The long-term experience of the author in teaching practical Russian as a foreign language at the university level enables her to analyse examples of Internet resources that can be useful in searching for, describing and revising colloquial lexical items. They may be incorporated into teaching as well as self-studying. Furthermore, the paper offers sample linguistic and communicative exercises that can be used in forming the ability of distinguishing and practical use of colloquial style in Russian.
