‘Attar’s self-discovery

Summary/Abstract: The quest for one’s own self, for the path of realization of the true man (insan haqiqa) concealed in the innermost secret depths of the individual was a concern of the majority of the great figures of Iranian Sufism of the twelfth century, one of whom beyond doubt was Farid ad-Din ‘Attar, one of the greatest of mystic poets. This paper seeks to set out ‘Attar’s spiritual experience of self-discovery as revealed in the mystical journey of Salik-e Fikreta, the hero of his poetical work Musibatnama.
