Summary/Abstract: The article presents a canonical discussion on the ends of marriage – the procreation and education of children, and the good of the spouses – as it developed in connection with the two codes of canonic law. Unlike the 1917 code that recognized the primary and the secondary ends of marriage, the 1983 code avoided setting forth a hierarchy of ends of marriage in accord with Gaudium et spes of Vatican Council II, and recognized these ends as substantial to Christian understanding of marriage.
