Summary/Abstract: Teresa Margolles creates works that disclose the vulnerable condition of women in the brutality of gender violence in Ciudad Juárez in order to connect individual suffering to a collective ethics of responsibility and politics of empathy. She combines a photography and sound project with thorough research on the social and political situation of Mexico and its history. In the article, I intend to explain the paradox of visibility as invisibility. The people who pass the photographs do not reflect on the fate of the women: their faces disappear and become only an ornament. Margolles creates a complex narrative that is expressed publicly; her works challenge viewers and demand their attention, interpretation and listening. The artist rejects the idea of obliteration of the femicides, and she demands justice for both the victims and their families. In her artistic strategies, the concept of face (E. Levinas) and a particular feeling vs. history (G. Deleuze) become vital.
