Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to show the interdependence between the world of economics and the modern legal state. Attention was focused on the normative dimension of economics, which is the theory and practice of economic policy. In the case of the rule of law, the model of modern liberal democracy, characteristic of Western European countries, was used as a point of reference. The article presents the evolution of the theory and practice of economic policy under the influence of structural changes and shocks in the economy. The author discusses the mechanism of the emergence of populist currents, pointing to the threats of populism to the rule of law and to the effectiveness of economic policy. The conclusions apply to the regulatory and economic issues related to contemporary civilizational challenges.
