Summary/Abstract: In her novel entitled La disparition de la langue française, through the main character, the Algerian named Berkane, Assia Djbar depicts the pains of exile. However, in the process of discovering the Algerian memory on his return to his native land, after twenty years of exile, these pains will be further reinforced at the sight of his homeland falling apart. Thus, even his great return is curiously experienced as a traumatic moment of chock, which can only be overcome in the act of reminiscence of the marvellous time spent in France with the Frenchwoman Marlyse/Marise. In this dual situation, one finally faces an intercultural character, swaying between two lands and cultures, before vanishing away as the French language of which he was both the incarnation and the main symbol above all.
