Summary/Abstract: An unparallelled document has been preserved by the Manuscript Collection of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The official registry, analysed in the present paper, contains the confidential expenses of Prime Minister Menyhért Lónyay in the year 1872. On the basis of the list, which consists of 730 items, the author explores the activities that post-1867 Hungarian governments deployed with the aim of influencing the press and the parliamentary elections. The study, moreover, reveals those secret government actions which were directed at the observation of Croatian and Serbian national movements, and the relief of Hungarian officers who had taken part in the war of independence of 1849-1849 and their widows.
