Summary/Abstract: The study explores the history of relations between the Compatriotic Association of the Germans from Hungary [Landsmannschaft der Deutschen aus Ungarn] and the Communist Regime of Budapest from 1951 to 1989. This relationship, as compared to the relations of other organistions of expatriated people with their country of origin, features such individual characteristics that add considerably to our understanding of the special development of Hungarian- West-German relations in the second half of the twentieth century. The inquiry focusses on two groups of questions: 1. What position was adopted by the national leadership of the Landsmannschaft as opposed to the Hungarian communist holders of power, what changes can be observed in the aims of the Association, and what was their background? 2. How did the Budapest regime react to the declarations and activities of the Landsmannschaft, what kind of changes can be detected over time, and what reasons lay behind them?
