Some Thoughts on the Material Culture of the Avar Period from the Perspective of a Settlement Archaeologist

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to survey the results of settlement archaeology of the Avar Period. Having briefly introduced the more important milestones of research history, it summarizes the individual settlement features, and then briefly explores the features of settlement structure that can be reconstructed on the basis of large-scale excavations. The second part of the paper raises three general problems that regard the whole of settlement archaeology of the Avar period.
