An Orientalized Western Fairy Tale: A Committed Rewriting of Little Red Riding Hood

Summary/Abstract: In the contemporary era, many writers show an important interest in rewriting fairy tales. Reinvented, these stories adapt themselves to a new historical and religious reality and often speak on behalf of writers engaged against the faults of the contemporary world. The approach below is an illustration of the migration process of the fairytale Little Red Riding Hood towards the Arab-muslim universe, through the prism of the metamorphosis of the aggressor, an essential element of the morphology of the fairy tale as theorized by Vladimir Propp. Most often identified with the wolf of the hypotext, the aggressor becomes in the contemporary text a collective character and gets humanized. He becomes the symbol of a fallen mankind, devoid of any humanity and plagued by cruelty. The five parts of our analysis are organized around two main axes which focus on the reasons and the ways of this process of re-creation of the fairy tale in contemporary times. The Orientalizing rewriting transforms the text of Tahar Ben Jelloun into a rough, rude piece of reality and denounces the violence of the world.
