Summary/Abstract: Rewriting triggers issues concerning the reading that precedes and underpins it. In fact, rewriting a work implies – as a preliminary step – the reading and assimilation of the hypotext by a scholarly and hard-working writer, who then proceeds to its decontextualization and recontextualization. As the text is a place of encounter and dialogue between previous writings and the framework text, the analysis of the interaction between reading and writing becomes a must. A literary work cannot be separated from the writings that preceded it, especially when writers are passionate readers, and so are their characters. Readers’ involvement in scriptural projects leads us to question the relationship between reading and writing in two French-language literary works that seem to illustrate the theme we are interested in: The Enigma of the Return by Dany Laferrière (2009) and The Dog of Ulysses by Salim Bachi (2001).
