Summary/Abstract: Review: Monika Heinemann, Krieg und Kriegserinnerung im Museum: Der Zweite Weltkrieg in polnischen Ausstelungen seit den 1980-er Jahren [War and War Memories in the Museum: The Second World War in Polish Exhibitions since the 1980s], Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Göttingen 2017. In her monograph Krieg und Kriegserinnerung im Museum [War and War Memories in the Museum, 2017] Monika Heinemann proposes a novel method of analysing exhibitions in historical museums. This method is an adaptation of Clifford Geertz’s thick description, but it is also based on a combination of synchronic and diachronic analysis. Heinemann analyses the transformations of basic interpretative patterns in permanent exhibitions in Polish historical museums. The results of her analyses allow her to identify a long-term shift in the Polish culture of remembrance from the 1980s to the first decade of the twenty-first century.
