Summary/Abstract: Examining physical time in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain Wojciechowska argues that Mann develops a thought experiment on time in this novel and that the sanatorium’s space-time continuum is an epistemological model that is part of this thought experiment. She highlights three key aspects related to the construction of physical time: the locality of time, the measurement of time and the time of nature. They amount to an ambiguous model of time that elapses in a particular, heterogeneous way. The world of the sanatorium is a reality in which change (brought about by movement) is so subtle that it causes physical time to stretch, while also representing a source of Hans Castorp’s cognitive uncertainty.
