Summary/Abstract: Drawing on the concept of postmemory in her reading of Monika Sznajderman’s Fałszerze pieprzu: Historia rodzinna [Pepper Counterfeiters: A Family History], Kobielska also explores what contributions this memory and writing project makes to the postmemory canon. Her interpretation of Sznajderman’s book and its reception becomes a point of departure for reflections on the structure of Polish commemorative culture, understood in terms of various sets of duties or obligations, and on how they might be modified. Kobielska identifies “Polish duties,” generally understood as related to the self-affirmatory dimension of shared remembering, as well as the duties of “settling accounts”, which are critical or which result from the inheritance of the Shoah; the aim of this article is to outline possibilities to reformulate this opposition.
