Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to give a short account of the cultural and scientific context surrounding the founding of the ”Arhiva pentru Ştiinţa şi Reforma Socială” (”The Archive for Science and Social Reform”) publication. After the First World War, the intellectual elite spared no effort in order to contribute to the modernization of the Romanian society. The modernization process had begun as early as mid XIX century, however, the phenomenon amplified greatly after the Unification. Together with the increased territory and population came a series of challenges for both the political and the intellectual elite. Historians, sociologists, ethnologists, linguists, economists, savants and representatives of the natural, exact and applied sciences became active participants in the scientific and socio-political arena. They created associations, societies, institutes as well as scientific publications, and connected their research with their national and international fellow scientists, effectively creating the perfect environment for the scientific and economic progress of the newly formed state. Arhiva pentru Ştiinţa şi Reforma Socială, as its name suggests, was, therefore, part of a national movement, which viewed the intellectuals as the building block of a modern society. Thus, scientific and cultural accomplishments were not mere personal achievements, but a way to change and improve the society. In the following we will attempt to draw with quick and broad strokes the said scientific context.
