Summary/Abstract: The paper of Marius Diaconescu analyses the debate that has been launched by the Romanian assembly held at Gyulafehérvár on 1 December 1918 and its consequences. For the declaration, which announced the secession of the Romanians of Hungary and their joining of Romania, was interpreted in different ways by the Hungarian and Romanian politicians. For, whereas the former interpreted the points of the declaration as an engagement for a more equitable minority policy, the latter read them as an autonomy based on ethnicity. This difference has determined Hungarian and Romanian attitudes to the anniversary of the assembly – and to the Transylvanian question in generakl – ever since.
