Summary/Abstract: The paper offers synthesizing and critical reflections on the workshop held on 7 September, 2018 at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, as well as on the two contributions published here. The authors focus on the dilemma of the historian’s normativity in the context of interpreting the Trianon-phenomenon broadly understood. Furthermore, they argue for the distancing function of history: with its tendency to emphasize complexity, ambiguity and multivariate causation, historiography offers reminders in public discourse about the multiplicity of valid perspectives and the dangers of reductionist retro-projection.
