The Beginnings of the National Competence of the Chapter of Buda

Summary/Abstract: By analysing the reports made by the chapter of Buda between 1301 and 1460, the paper seeks to answer the question of how the institution’s national competence as a place of authentication had emerged by the late Middle Ages. After an early start in the midfourteenth century, an important step was the move of the royal court to Buda around 1385, but then a royal decree that can be dated to 1397 and the foundation of the university at Óbuda blocked the process. Thus, it was only after 1437 that, parallel to the changing course of domestic politics, intensive activity on a national scale began.
