Summary/Abstract: In psychiatric hospital units, crisis management is a common phenomenon. Indeed, depending on the patients' illnesses, behaviors which can be related to crisis can occur and will have to be resolved by the healthcare teams. In this paper, we discuss a particular moment in the management of these crises: the nurses' handovers. Conducted between the caregivers' work shifts, these are contexts in which the clinical news of patients that are taken care of in the unit, including crisis management within the service, are discussed. Using audiovisual recordings of these meetings, we have isolated moments of discussion between psychiatrists and nurses, to show how the management of crisis episodes is collaborative, and resorts to a particular argumentative process: the use of reported speech. Ultimately we will see that, even though the psychiatrist is legally the only one making prescriptions, it is the whole team that makes a decision regarding the management of the patient's crisis.
