IDENTITY AND LINGUISTIC CRISIS IN THE WRITING OF EUGENE ÉBODÉ: GAME AND ISSUE

Summary/Abstract: Eugene Ebode is one of the Francophone writers who, in spite of having left Africa to migrate to Europe when he was too young, produce works essentially marked by linguistic and cultural facts. The reading of two of his masterpieces, La divine colère and La Transmission, undoubtedly highlights a permanent ambition: promote and value African languages, especially his native Ewondo. The undeniable current reality that some Western and Eastern languages are of global use clearly justifies this choice of the French language as the main means of communication in the literature produced by contemporary Negro-African writers. Consequently, African languages are destined to die at over the years for lack of speakers. The manifestation of the French-Ewondo bilingualism, which is frequently observed in this author’s texts, is of diverse importance: make vernacular the French language with the aim of appropriating, granting somehow an international status to the Ewondo language, and allow a relatively complete exteriorization of his socio-cultural ontology. At the same time, despite the complexity of such an exercise, that author fulfills his role as an artist writer, concerned with the original aesthetic quality of his work.
