Summary/Abstract: Taking a closer look at selected intellectuals of the pre-revolutionary Azerbaijan, this article intends to demonstrate how the new Azerbaijani-Turkic identity developed since the mid-19th century. Works of such eminent men of letters as Mirzә Fәtәli Axundov, Hәsәnbәy Zәrdabi or Firidun Köçәrli reflect their advocacy for strengthening the native language, modernisation of the social life of their community and convey a call to overcome confessional antagonisms. After 1905 in the wake of the first Russian Revolution these issues gained momentum and were widely discussed in the Azerbaijani society. Debates over language und identity that have shaped the conceptual fundament of the Republic founded in 1918 are examined on the examples of two prominent journals of the time, Molla Nәsrәddin and Füyuzat.
