Summary/Abstract: This paper is based on a teaching experience which aims at showing how functionalism can successfully be introduced in business translation classes for undergraduates in France (Applied Foreign Languages). Functionalism helps students consider financial translation as a communication tool and a targeted activity: besides a specialized lexicon (ESP), the text to translate contains a highly technical discourse and economic knowledge the student should master and understand to fully and accurately translate newspaper articles. Moreover, the four functions described in Nord’s theory help students translate a text into the target language and its cultural, societal and business environment.
