Summary/Abstract: In the dispute between Theodoret of Cyrus and St. Cyril of Alexandria, one can seethe way in which a theology remaining within the static and old categories of theNestorian thought particularly focusing on prosopon, is unable to understand until 449a dynamic and insightful theology that is based on Scripture and the Holy Traditionfocused on the reality of the hypostasis or of the person of the Son of God Incarnate, represented by St. Cyril. The latter understands the union between the Son of God andhumanity in a single hypostasis as union by hypostasis, an approach that will provideto the subsequent theological thinking a deep, authentic Christological basis
