Summary/Abstract: Mother and daughter - two women, for years functioning within a single household, exert a huge influence on each other. Although broaching the topic can be awkward, their relations are not free of aversion, regret and jealousy. Quantitative research carried out on a sample of 516 Polish women shows that adult women tend to quarrel with their mothers more often than with other members of their family of origin. The intensity of this phenomenon differs depending on the family model in which the woman was brought up. Continuous conflict in an atmosphere of peace is the natural environment for these relations. Mothers and daughters often live in a setup that burdens them, without realizing that they are following harmful behavioural scripts. Social understanding of the woman’s role in the family largely determines this situation. Referring to works in the field of sociology of the family, the psychology of conflict and gender studies, the author strives to explain the specificity of antagonisms in mother-and-daughter relations.
