Summary/Abstract: Human sciences have enabled us to comprehend religion starting from the anthropological experience of the sacred. The emotional and cognitive structure of the sacred is closely related to symbolic imagination, responsible for the creation of myths, and also to “play”, the basis of ritual behavior. In traditional societies, the culminating point in the institution of sacred play was represented by religious rituals. The great plasticity of the concept of the sacred enables us to seize the metamorphoses of religion in contemporary societies. It highlights the secularization of religion in public space, but also its replacement by various substitute forms and behaviours.
