Polish-Ukrainian Relations on the Background on the History of the Popular Song "Hej, sokoly!" ("Hej, falcons!")

Summary/Abstract: The article reveals the history of the song "Hej Sokoły!" which is popular today both in Poland and Ukraine. This song tells the story of a young Cossack who went abroad and longs for his motherland Ukraine and his beloved girl who stayed there. Although the work expresses love for Ukraine, it is not a Ukrainian, but a Polish song. It is connected with the environment of Poles, who left Ukrainian land after the Second World War. In 1918-1939, the modern territories of Western Ukraine (Galicia and Volhynia) were part of the Polish state. Many Polish families lived there. After the Second World War, Volhynia and Galicia became part of the Ukrainian SSR, a large number of Poles moved to Poland within its new borders. Expressed in the song "Hej Sokoły!" longing for Ukraine is not unambiguous from the Ukrainian and Polish points of view. At the same time, this work, translated into Ukrainian, gained popularity and is considered a Ukrainian patriotic song. Thus, the version of the origin of the song proposed in the article completely refutes the common opinion about the author of this song Tomasz (Tymko) Padura (1801–1871), and shows how complicated the Polish-Ukrainian relations are.
