Summary/Abstract: The article examines the genre of film travelogue and the changes that occur in the audience reception due to the digital age. Undermining the credibility of the camera image and the breach of authenticity give rise to exciting practices in hybrid film forms. The focus is on the unusual way of presenting ethnographic rituals from distant and unknown places in Bastien Dubois’ films: Madagascar: A Journey Diary and the TV5 series Portraits from a Voyage. The author creates film hybrids that combine documentary photography with animation to represent exotic places and rituals expressively: from Armenia to Louisiana and from Russia through Syria to Japan. The Oscar nomination of Madagascar… observes a strange local ritual – the annual exhumation and reburial of the dead, which is both a holiday and a moment of grief and reverence. This custom, called Famadihana, is recreated with artistry that transforms the visual style from true-to-life portraiture to free-flowing drawing, scrolling through cutouts and CGI images. The series Portraits from a Voyage similarly challenges the film language to show both real ethnographic facts and a subjective author’s view. The animated “document” is a more honest and expressive representation of reality, in contrast to the substitution we often see in the manipulated imagery of computerprocessedfilm travelogues.
