Phraseology of Alice in Wonderland

Summary/Abstract: Since phraseology is very rich ground for cultural examination, and considering that Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is being translated more than once in western Balkan, we have found it interesting to look closely to this piece of art, especially the translation of idioms. We call them idiomatic constructions in Bosnian language, since Bosnian language does not have the tradition of using the term idioms as in English language. Some of the translations were richer than the original, and the other way around. Examining this, we have come to another conclusion. It is a fact that predicate as a center of the sentence is very often expressed by idioms, but also as a decomposed predicate. We have noticed that many of the idioms in English language are being translated into Bosnian like decomposed predicate. This is why we have considered decomposed predicates as units of phraseology. Also, what we called linguistic transposition, works in phraseology in this way. Considering everything written in this paper we have concluded that The Chesire Cat in Alice in Wonderland is just like idioms in language: one cannot really catch them all, they appear and disappear the way “they” want.
