Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to engage in considerations about the marks and the symbols which were used to sign books. The signing of library collections may involve annotation by the hand of the owner or the affixing of an ex libris. On the basis of examples furnished by cancelled/void library catalogue numbers the author will make reference to the historical provenance of a collection. The material form of a codex contains a number of markings which aid bibliological research such as a water mark, which contributes to the structure of paper. The ability to read the formal and style‑related composition of a mark, the appropriate identification of the technique of design e.g. end sheet paper may determine the period and the place where a book was made or it may confirm its authenticity.
