Summary/Abstract: Picture books are a special type of books that are comprised of the text and illustrations, combining them into an integrated unit. It needs to be pointed out that picture books differ from other types of books not (only) in the literary genre, but also in that there is correlation between the verbal code, the visual code, and design, i.e. the text impacts the understanding of the meaning of illustrations, whereas illustrations change and enhance the meaning of the text. The picture book The Little Girl and the Giant by Neli Kodrič Filipić and Tomislav Torjanac has been selected as an example for the presentation of the multimodal reading model. The findings of our analysis show the following: (1) When reading a multimodal text, it is essential for the information obtained from the text and the illustrations to be included in the analysis, synthesis and evaluation in equal measure. (2) In terms of multimodality, it can be noted that critical reading of picture books requires understanding of verbal and visual communication codes and the interaction between them.
