Terrazzo Mosaics in Residential Buildings from the Interwar Period in Sofia as an Element of the Interior Design

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents examples of floor mosaics in the foyers and stair-ways of interwar residential buildings in Sofia (mostly apartment buildings) as an important element of interior design and attempts to classify them. Most often, mosaics indicate the year of construction or the name of the building (inform-ative value), sometimes they follow repeated simple geometric patterns (which is conditioned by the mass construction of residential buildings in the capital in the interwar period) and in other cases they could be considered as decorative art of high artistic values. However, these mosaics always followed the stylistics of the architectural project, they are consistent with the spirit of the time, the ideas and concepts, infiltrating the architecture of the Modern Movement of the time of the WWI.
