Summary/Abstract: This contribution critically engages the current state of research on 20th-century Bulgarian music. Based on an interpretation of Konstantin Iliev’s opera The Master of Boyana (1962), the category “model” as an essential fo-cal point for Bulgarian composers and musicologists is outlined. A reading of Georgij Gačev’s concept of accelerated development shows that the significance of models concerning aspects of originality and epigonism goes far beyond the Bulgarian context. Nevertheless, neither post-colonial theory nor the framework of balkanism can fully explain these phenomena. Instead, an approach based on globalism and a reevaluation of institutionalized hierarchies within the discipline musicology is proposed.
