MAURYCY MOCHNACKI: DISCIPLINE AND PUNISH

Summary/Abstract: The author discusses a controversial document entitled Pismo karmelickie (The Carmelite Writing) written by Maurycy Mochnacki, an inspiring personality of the Polish political and cultural life during the first decades of the nineteenth century. This analysis of the text mentioned is based on Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish: the Birth of the Prison (1975). The author reconstructs the model of ‘utopia of absolutism’, which has much in common with Foucault’s theory of ‘power-knowledge’ or ‘disciplinary institutions’.
