(IM)MORALITY IN HENRIK IBSEN’S GHOSTS AND CATS’ BRIDGE BY HERMANN SUDERMANN

Summary/Abstract: The individuals’ confrontation with conventional moral ideals, their revolt against the morality of the 19th century, the ambiguous difference between morality and immorality, the discovery and annihilation of the causes of immorality (hereditary and social flaws) are problems which drew the attention of both the Norwegian Henrik Ibsen and the German Hermann Sudermann. In this paper, a comparative analysis on Ibsen’s Ghosts and Sudermann’s Cats’ Bridge is performed in order to show the conflict between appearance and essence.
