Summary/Abstract: ON JANUARY 24, 1859, ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA WAS ELECTED RULER OF WALLACHIA, OBTAINING THE UNANIMITY OF THE VOTES CAST DURING THE MEETING OF THE ASSEMBLY OF DEPUTIES, ALL 64 MEMBERS AGREED WITH THE PROPOSAL EXPRESSED IN THE FIRST PART OF THE SITTING, WHICH HAD BEEN SECRET. THUS, AN INTERMEDIATE STEP WAS TAKEN IN THE DIRECTION DESIRED BY MOST OF THE ROMANIAN POLITICAL CLASS, THAT OF BRINGING TO THE PRINCIPALITY A RULER FROM ONE OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE. ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA WAS CONSIDERED, FROM THIS POINT OF VIEW, A “TEMPORARY DEPOSITORY” OF THE “SACRED TREASURE” REPRESENTED BY THE THRONE OF THE TWO PRINCIPALITIES.
