Summary/Abstract: Founded in 2003, the Border Crossings Network (BCN) brings together academics from a number of Balkan countries. The network encourages cooperation between specialists and students in the field of ethnology, social and cultural anthropology,folklore and Balkan studies. Relying on self-reflection, participant observationand a series of interviews, the article examines the Bulgarian contribution to theevents organized by Border Crossings in the small Greek town of Konitsa, focusingon student conferences and summer schools in anthropology, ethnography andcomparative folklore studies in the Balkans. The research topic is: what contacts doBulgarian ethnologists/anthropologists maintain within the network and what are thebenefits and obstacles to communication and travel. The analysis refers to 4 main aspects: the establishment and maintenance of relations; motivation and benefitsfrom participation; uncertainty in presentation and foreign language skills; financialdimensions and prioritization.
