Summary/Abstract: On the face of it, landscape painting appears to be neutral with regard to the sociopolitical context where an artwork is created. In fact sociopolitical conditions often significantly impact the development of the genre even when an artist seems to be indifferent to both social and political processes. The paper deals with different examples to illustrate various responses by the artists to the sociopolitical reality. The range of such reactions was wide, from intentional retreat to sharp criticism.Landscapes painted under totalitarianism or authoritarianism and created more often than not under political or social pressure played a special role, becoming something of a political proclamation.
