Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to bring the reader closer to Professor, Father Jozef Tischner, on the twentieth anniversary of his death. His pastoral work as well as his involvement in public affairs have been outlined from the perspective of his long-standing assistant. The final part of the paper, based on the concept of freedom developed in The Controversy over Human Existence, shows the way Tischner practised philosophy to tackle the most important issues relating to contemporary culture.
