Summary/Abstract: This article is an essay on the cultural significance of Istanbul. Byzantium, New Rome, Constantinople, Dersaadet (i.e., the Gate of Happiness), Stanbul, the Sublime Porte or Tsarigrad, as we find it in chronicles today or in the past, fascinates with all it has, leaving the impression of endlessness at every step. The streets, the roads, the bridges, the ports seem to forget their extremities being so endless. Istanbul is an endlessly “civilized” city in the sense of the continuous suite of civilizations (Thracians, Megarians, Phrygians, Persians, Bithynians, Jews, Romans, Greeks, Ottomans) who have spread traces of their passage through out these places, uniquely and unrepeatable.
