Summary/Abstract: This essay presents three episodes in the evolution of the Portuguese-Brazilian relationship in the 1890s. All three episodes reflect imbalances in the relationship between the two countries. They indicate the different ways in which the former mother country and its former colonies negotiated their relationship with each other in terms of identity and politics. Both sides relied on fraternal bonding, but Brazil, the young American republic, was more the reluctant party, while Portugal, the weakening monarchy in need of support, was more eager to see opportunities for cooperation across the Atlantic.
