Summary/Abstract: This text is an evocation of Metropolitan Bartolomeu Anania. As a student in Cluj, Anania was a man of the 20th century, convinced that the adventure of human knowledge always promises something noble and exciting. That the brutality of the Second World War and its totalitarian posterity would disprove the enthusiasm of that generation, crushing his sons between the grave, the gulag and the exile. It is of course tragic, but everything he accumulated during his university searches helped him sapientially sort out this terrible experience. The physical pain, the detention, the harassment he suffered from the communist „bodies”, but also finding the national elite behind bars, the moral dilemmas generated by the investigations were – in Father Anania’s case – a huge exis- tential, faustic laboratory, with the result of a strong and upright man. He was not a mystical monk of abysmal spirituality. He was a literate among literates, an editor among editors, a servant of the Church ready to obey, an American expatriate, in solidarity with his family. He did not present himself as what he was not (for example, a great clergyman), but he practiced, in his own way, an ascetic life, seeing his earthly course of life as an athletic arena for the somersault in that dimension without face, without moment and without spatial limits. Father Anania fully embodied that royal and still free Romania, where you got your place according to merits, where the important elders of the city were revered and young people worked hard to educate or train themselves. Playwright, theologian, poet, novelist, polemicist, art critic, memorialist, akathist author, erudite Bible scholar, librarian, publisher, magazine editor, teacher and preacher: here is the range of his creative hypos- tases equally anchored in the cult of the Romanian language and creative force of the Logos.
